A student's peer group is the single most powerful influence on personal growth during the college years.
But how does one adjust to this new social environment and build friendships that will make a positive impact on your life?
Part of the adjustment process for first year students involves grieving the loss of pre-college friendships. This separation sometimes produces feelings of intense loss which in turn, can create emotional distress.
Many times students may try to fill this void in harmful ways by becoming involved in unhealthy relationships or behaviors such as alcohol or tobacco use.
